Another Year in the Life

I'm a twenty something associate pastor at a Baptist church, newly married who loves to share my narrative with others according to my friends. I find joy in writing even though I readily admit that I'm a horrible speller (pardon my errors). Come journey through my reflections of life, work and faith. This year is bound to be interesting, I know!

The Tradition of the Cake

This Monday, Kevin and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary!

As part of the celebration, we made quick trip to Georgia to secure the wedding cake topper that was part of our reception one year ago. My mother-in-law froze it exactly as the bakery instructed with hopes that it would taste like something to us other than freezer burn a year later.

I am happy to report that the cake tasted alright. Not great, but not awful like many told us it would be. (My mom reminded me that her cake one year later was moldy, so our expectations were low). The icing on the other hand, left nothing to be desired, though. I ended up having a couple bites of the cake without the icing just to say I ate some of it.

The experience of obtaining the cake and attempting to eat it was really not about the cake itself; it was about the memories of the wedding.
I really enjoyed the conversations that Kevin and I got to have over the cake. (In addition, it was fun that we actually had the time to notice the designs on the cake itself as totally were oblivious before). It was delightful to think about the happiness of having all our good friends and family gathered around us on that day. It was special to consider how different moments in our wedding experience met so much to both of us-- the kindness of each of our parents, the countless hours the Sylvania crew put in to give us such a beautiful reception and wedding site, and the sacrifices of friends and family to be present on that day. I know everyone thinks this about their own wedding, but I believe we had one of the most memorable days ever!

I was glad to have the experience of eating the wedding cake on this anniversary. It caused both us the opportunity to stop and be thankful for all the amazing people in our lives as well as how happy both of us are to have each other.
I highly suggest such a tradition for any soon to be brides and grooms!
