Another Year in the Life

I'm a twenty something associate pastor at a Baptist church, newly married who loves to share my narrative with others according to my friends. I find joy in writing even though I readily admit that I'm a horrible speller (pardon my errors). Come journey through my reflections of life, work and faith. This year is bound to be interesting, I know!

10 Lessons Learned in Manhattan

Even though I only live four hours from one of the coolest cities in America (New York), it is sad that I don't get to visit very often. Thus, I could think of no greater birthday present than to go for a weekend and get to see the city through the eyes of my husband's experiences and sharing mine with him. We had a great time!

In the spirit of Letterman, here goes my top ten lessons learned while in Manhattan:

10. Always ask for a free upgrade at your hotel because you might just be surprised to get it. (We got moved to the Club Floor of our hotel and got free breakfast- a rarity in NYC).

9. The snow in the city won't spoil a day of fun. (Even with four inches+ on the ground the sidewalks and streets were clear on Friday).

8. Yet, if it snows don't hide out in the department stores of the shopping districts: everyone is there too!

7. When taking the train, do not fear the time it takes to get through security (because there is none), but do fear the stamped of people who will run to the gate when it is posted in order to get a good seat. (It's like flying Southwest without the A, B, and C lines).

6. Connecting with a local New Yorker is a much better way to see the city. You might just find yourself in a unique shopping mall in the middle of Chelsea where they tape shows for the Food Network or eating brunch at one of the hottest new restaurants that all the other tourists don't know about (thanks to my cousin Ellis).

5. Vacations are much better when you take a nap in the middle of them. Even in a city that doesn't sleep that much, you should find time to snooze. (It is part of why you left home anyway).

4. St. Patrick's Cathedral is one of the most beautiful places in the city. Walking in you feel like you've been beamed into one of the great European town in an instant.

3. Come hungry to the city because Times Square has a specialty store for almost anything you are hungry for! (My personal favorite things I ate included pizza, of course).

2. Brazilian Steak Houses aren't for me. (Though my husband loves the unlimited meat feasts at these types of restaurants, especially the one we visited on our trip-- seeing dozens of waiters bring out large pieces of every type of meat you could imagine made me want to turn into a vegetarian on the spot).

1. There is nothing better than walking through a beautiful, quaint neighborhood in the city; the window shopping is the best fun of all! (Even better: it is FREE in a city that wants to take your money at every turn).

When can I go back?
