In Due Time
Almost a year ago now, I preached a sermon on New Year's Eve on Ecclesiastes 3-- the famous chapter of the Bible which talks about "a time for peace, a time for war, a time to uproot, a time to sow..." At this point, I don't remember the exact point of the sermon except that I encouraged people to take time to enjoy life, not to get overburdened by tasks to finish, but to rely on God's perfect time for work, play and rest.
The words of this sermon have seemed to hang over my very task centered year. Who would have thought of all that 2007 would have brought me? (I think I'll begin to mark my "New Years" not by Januarys but in Octobers. Because for the last two years, this is when all the big things seem to happen.)
A year ago last October, I officially moved to Maryland and began full-time ministry as an ordained pastor. Because of this, there was a new driver's license to get, new car inspection and tags to buy, bills to set up payment for and business cards to obtain with the word Reverend in front of my name. Once all these tasks were complete, it was such an amazing feeling.
Getting married changed everything, however! The process of newness began again! But, even with many more things on the to-do-list! Wherever my name was known: phone messages, email, driver's licence, social security cards, bank statements, business cards and many more places, corrections now need to be made. Little changes when compiled together= lots of time. Yet, not to mention it is the busiest season of the year at work and Kevin and I have many house projects to take care of to ensure what used to be "my place" feels like "our place" as a family. If I think about it too much, stress seems to overtake me.
However, the phrase IN DUE TIME keeps coming to mind. No, not everything will be done today, maybe not even this week, but in due time what I need to accomplish will find its way to a completion point, I'm sure.
While it frustrates me that our house is cluttered with stuff that needs a home and my name is not fully adjusted to its proper spelling at the banks yet, I am reminded that there is a time for everything. I need to add here that I hate clutter and unfinished projects! Sometimes you just can't control it all, though.
It gives me hope to get off the couch this evening and begin to do something about all the "to-dos" in my life. Hopefully by next October, I'll have this year's to-do-list done and be enabled to keep my same driver's licence for two years in a row!
